During the recent years, nature tourism has gained great importance in Mexico and Veracruz. However, the potential of rural areas for the integration of ecotourism as agro-ecotourism has been hardly studied. Given the complexity of rural areas, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are quite useful for integrating information from different dimensions, allowing the definition of zones or potential ecotourism sites for planning activities. Therefore, the objective of this research was to design a conceptual model for the implementation of a GIS to identify the potentials and constraints for the development of agro-ecotourism in different regions and municipalities of the State of Veracruz. The GIS design is proposed by modeling data layers of externally thematic and conceptual issues and proposed attributes defined from the consultation literature and secondary sources. The conceptual model obtained, allow the implementation of a GIS to identify potential and constraints in the State and municipal levels, where we can conduct research and policies to develop this potential and particularize local needs and sustainability for the development of agro-ecotourism.
