The treatment system stabilization ponds is the most widely used in Latin America, as they are easy to operate and build, but it presents a major drawback: the requirement of the land. These systems require more area than any other treatment system. Therefore, is to send you to him to carry out a study properly analyzed so that the results will shed the least area required. The purpose of this paper was to apply the nonlinear programming algorithm generalized reduced gradient (GRG) in order to optimize the traditional design and cost of the treatment system. We designed a facultative pond; the results indicate a decrease of the hydraulic retention time of 4 days and a minor area of 14.79%. Parsing both perfectly meet boundaries permissible of pollutant concentration indicating the standard for the discharge of treated water receiving bodies.
