Abstract

The understanding of the landscape has gained momentum among communities seeking alternatives to improve production methods and heritage management. The agave landscape gives meaning and identity to diverse regions in Mexico. This research discusses the perceptions of members of two communities about the natural and cultural heritage surrounding agave. The case study of Tlalquiltenango, Morelos and Arandas, Jalisco, has been selected because both communities produce alcoholic beverages from the exploitation of the agave plant, which not only means the use of material goods, but also a product of culture, history and identity. In order to get a closer look at the perception of the agave landscape, an instrument was designed and applied to workers and decision-makers. The results showed that most of the participants perceived the agave landscape as part of their heritage and identity, which provides elements to glimpse and/or identify some application and use of the residuals, leading to the conservation of the landscape in these communities.
