Abstract

Drought is the main factor limiting the production of rainfed beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Mexico. The aim of this study was to identify varieties of common and Tepary beans that are more resistant to drought than the varieties Pinto Villa and Pinto Saltillo. The experiments were established in 2010 and 2011 at the Experimental Station of INIFAP in Bachiniva, Chihuahua. Seven bean varieties were evaluated, all of different race, growth habit and response to drought. We used the irrigation-drought method, with two support irrigations during the cycle plus the precipitation of the year (351 mm) for the irrigation treatment, and only the precipitation of the year for the drought treatment. We evaluated days to flowering, days to physiological maturity and seed yield in kg ha-1. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replicates. Each replicate comprised of two furrows of 5 m in 2010 and a furrow of 5 m per replicate in 2011. Was used the fertilizer formula 30-50-00. In 2010, the most stable genotype was Rosa La Bufa, with an increase in yield of only 10.5% under irrigation compared to drought. In 2011, the most stable genotypes were brown Tepary with 152.5% and Rosa La Bufa with 198.4%.
